Crime against tourists is uncommon and infrastructure in the major cities is modern and well developed. The most important preparation is less about personal safety and more about understanding local laws, customs and the climate.

Local laws and customs

Saudi Arabia has rules that differ from those in the Nordic countries. Alcohol and drugs are prohibited, public behaviour is expected to be modest, and photographing people, military sites and certain public buildings requires care or is not permitted.

• Dress modestly in public – shoulders and knees should be covered.

• Respect prayer times; some shops close briefly during them.
• Do not bring alcohol, drugs or vaping products against local rules.

Health and climate

Healthcare in the major cities is of a high standard. The most common challenge for visitors is the heat: drink plenty of water, use sun protection and plan demanding activities for morning or evening. Check vaccination recommendations well before departure.

Transport

Domestic flights connect the country and long road journeys are common. Traffic can feel hectic. We recommend experienced local drivers or guides for longer stretches and in desert areas.

Women travelling

Women can travel to Saudi Arabia independently, stay in hotels and move around freely. An abaya is not required for foreign visitors, but loose, covering clothing is recommended. Many travellers experience great hospitality from locals.
