Hegra in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, with monumental tombs in the desert

Hegra, Elephant Rock, Old Town, Maraya, and some of Saudi Arabia's most spectacular landscapes.

Amidst dramatic sandstone mountains, ancient trade routes, and green palm groves lies one of Saudi Arabia's most spectacular destinations.

AlUla.

Just a few years ago, the area was relatively unknown to international tourists. Today, AlUla has become one of the most important symbols of Saudi Arabia's new focus on tourism.

Here, you can visit tombs more than 2,000 years old, wander through a historic desert town, see enormous natural rock formations, dine under the stars, and stay at some of the country's most spectacular resorts.

It is also here you will find Hegra – Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage site.

But AlUla is much more than Hegra.

In this guide, Saudi Reiser shows you what to see, how long to stay, when to travel, and how AlUla can be combined with the rest of Saudi Arabia.

Where is AlUla located?

AlUla is located in the northwest of Saudi Arabia.

The area consists of a green oasis surrounded by enormous rock formations, volcanic landscapes, valleys, and desert.

For thousands of years, this oasis has been a natural stopping point along important trade and caravan routes.

Water, agriculture, and a strategic location led several civilizations to settle here.

It is precisely this long historical layer that makes AlUla so special.

You will find traces of, among others:

  • the Dadanites
  • the Lihyanites
  • the Nabataeans
  • Roman influence
  • Islamic societies
  • historic pilgrimage and trade routes

Today, this history is combined with modern hotels, restaurants, cultural events, and experiences.

Why visit AlUla?

AlUla is not a classic travel destination.

It is the combination of landscape, history, tranquility, and architecture that makes the place unique.

In a single day, you can:

  • visit 2,000-year-old tombs
  • walk between enormous sandstone cliffs
  • have lunch in an oasis
  • see modern art and architecture
  • experience the sunset at Elephant Rock
  • end the evening with dinner under the stars

For history enthusiasts, AlUla is fascinating.

For photographers, the landscape is almost endless.

For the adventurous, there are tours, climbing, hot air balloons, and desert activities.

And for those who simply seek tranquility, there are luxurious resorts surrounded by mountains and desert.

Hegra – The Highlight of AlUla

Hegra is the most important historical attraction in AlUla.

The site was known as Al-Hijr in antiquity and was an important city in the Nabataean kingdom.

The Nabataeans are perhaps best known for Petra in Jordan.

But south of Petra, they also developed Hegra as a major trade and administrative center.

Here, there are more than 110 monumental tombs carved directly into the sandstone mountains.

Many have impressively decorated facades.

There are also ancient wells, water channels, defensive structures, and other traces of life in the city.

In 2008, Hegra became the first site in Saudi Arabia to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Qasr Al-Farid – The Lonely Tomb

The most famous monument in Hegra is Qasr Al-Farid.

The name roughly means 'the lonely castle'.

The tomb stands alone in the landscape and is carved directly into a huge block of stone.

The facade was never completed.

This makes the monument particularly interesting because you can clearly see how Nabataean craftsmen worked their way down through the rock.

Qasr Al-Farid is one of the most photographed places in all of Saudi Arabia.

When you stand in front of the monument, you truly get a sense of how monumental Hegra must have been 2,000 years ago.

How to visit Hegra?

Hegra is a protected heritage site.

Therefore, you cannot just drive freely between the tombs.

Visits usually take place through organized tours with a guide.

The tours start from a visitor center and use buses or private vehicles to move between the different areas.

This is actually an advantage.

A local guide – often called a Rawi – explains the history, inscriptions, architecture, and the people who lived here.

Without an explanation, a tomb might just look like an impressive facade.

With the story behind it, the site becomes much more alive.

Set aside about half a day for Hegra.

And it's a good idea to book in advance, especially during popular periods.

Elephant Rock – Jabal AlFil

Another of AlUla's most famous attractions is Elephant Rock.

In Arabic, the rock formation is called Jabal AlFil.

Millions of years of erosion have shaped the sandstone to resemble an enormous elephant with its trunk pointing towards the ground.

The formation is about 50 meters high and stands dramatically alone in the landscape.

The best time to visit Elephant Rock is often late in the afternoon.

As the sun sets, the mountains change color from yellow and orange to deep shades of red.

After dark, the rock formation is often illuminated.

This makes Elephant Rock a natural place to end a day of sightseeing.

Maraya – A Mirror in the Middle of the Desert

In the middle of Ashar Valley lies a building that seems to disappear into the landscape.

Maraya.

The name means 'mirror' in Arabic.

The entire building is covered in mirrored surfaces that reflect the surrounding mountains and desert.

The result is one of the world's most distinctive concert and cultural buildings.

Maraya is used for:

  • concerts
  • cultural events
  • conferences
  • special dinners
  • exhibitions

The building is also known as the world's largest mirrored building.

Even if you are not attending an event, the architecture alone is worth experiencing.

From a distance, it can almost look as if the mountains continue straight through the building.

AlUla Old Town

AlUla Old Town offers a completely different impression than Hegra.

Here lie the remains of a historic town with more than 900 traditional houses built of mudbrick, stone, and palm wood.

The town developed over centuries along ancient trade and pilgrimage routes.

The narrow streets were built close together to protect against both sun and wind.

Today, parts of the Old Town have been restored and revitalized.

You can wander through the area and experience:

  • historic buildings
  • traditional streets
  • small shops
  • restaurants
  • cafes
  • art
  • local products

In the evening, the area takes on a particularly pleasant atmosphere.

This is a great place to have dinner after a day of excursions.

AlUla Oasis

In the midst of the mountains lies the green AlUla Oasis.

Palm trees, citrus groves, and agricultural areas follow the valley through the landscape.

For thousands of years, the water sources in the oasis made it possible for people to live here.

This is a large part of the explanation for why so many civilizations developed right here in AlUla.

Today, you can walk through parts of the oasis along paths surrounded by palm trees and gardens.

The contrast between the green vegetation and the enormous red mountains around it is fantastic.

The oasis is especially beautiful early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Dadan – An Ancient Kingdom

Before the Nabataeans arrived in the area, other advanced societies existed in AlUla.

One of the most important was Dadan.

Dadan was the capital of the kingdoms of Dadan and later Lihyan.

Archaeological findings show that the area was an important regional center along the trade routes through the Arabian Peninsula.

On the mountainside above the ruins, you can see famous tombs known as the Lion Tombs.

They get their name from the lion sculptures that guard the entrances.

Dadan provides a fascinating insight into AlUla's history before Hegra and the Nabataeans.

Jabal Ikmah – A Library Carved in Rock

Not far from Dadan is Jabal Ikmah.

At first glance, it looks like an ordinary mountain valley.

But as you get closer, you discover hundreds of ancient inscriptions and symbols carved into the rock faces.

Here, there are texts written in several ancient languages and scripts.

The inscriptions deal with topics such as:

  • religion
  • trade
  • names
  • society
  • laws
  • daily life

Due to the large number of inscriptions, Jabal Ikmah is sometimes referred to as an open-air library.

For history enthusiasts, this is one of AlUla's most fascinating sites.

Dadan and Jabal Ikmah are often visited on the same organized tour.

Harrat Viewpoint

If you want to see AlUla from above, you should visit Harrat Viewpoint.

The viewpoint is located on top of the dark volcanic plateau west of the valley.

From here, you get a panoramic view of:

  • AlUla Oasis
  • Old Town
  • the rock formations
  • the desert
  • the surrounding landscape

Sunset is particularly popular.

As the light softens, the entire valley takes on warm colors.

It is a great place to understand just how dramatic the geography around AlUla actually is.

Sharaan Nature Reserve

AlUla is not just history.

The area also has a rich natural landscape.

Sharaan Nature Reserve protects large areas of mountains, canyons, and desert.

Work is also being done here on nature conservation and the restoration of local animal populations.

The landscape consists of enormous rock walls, narrow passages, and open desert valleys.

Excursions here are normally arranged with a guide and a suitable vehicle.

For nature lovers, Sharaan offers a completely different experience from the historical sites.

The Starry Sky in AlUla

When the sun goes down and the city lights disappear, something truly special happens in the desert.

The sky fills with stars.

The dry climate, open landscapes, and low light pollution make AlUla a fantastic place for stargazing.

Several operators offer organized stargazing evenings.

These can include:

  • transportation out into the desert
  • an astronomical introduction
  • telescopes
  • dinner
  • a bonfire
  • traditional Arabic coffee

For many, this becomes one of the most atmospheric experiences of their trip.

Hot Air Balloon Over AlUla

During certain events and periods, it is possible to experience AlUla from a hot air balloon.

From the air, you can see how enormous the area is.

Sandstone mountains, oases, valleys, and historical sites are spread across the landscape.

The AlUla Skies Festival is among the events that feature hot air balloons on their program.

Availability varies by season, weather, and event calendar.

Therefore, always check what is on offer when you plan to travel.

Hiking and Adventure

AlUla is also well-suited for active travelers.

There are several organized tours and experiences in the mountain and desert areas.

Activities can include:

  • hiking
  • canyoning
  • climbing
  • via ferrata
  • cycling
  • ziplining
  • 4x4 tours
  • stargazing
  • hot air ballooning

The range of activities varies throughout the year.

Due to the temperatures, many outdoor activities are primarily arranged during the cooler months.

When is the best time to travel to AlUla?

For most travelers, the period from approximately October to April is the most comfortable time to visit AlUla.

The temperatures are then better suited for sightseeing, hiking, and outdoor activities in the desert.

November to February

This is the high season.

The days are often pleasant and perfect for outdoor activities.

But don't underestimate the evenings.

AlUla is in the desert, and the temperature can drop significantly after sunset.

Bring a jacket.

March and April

Spring can be a very nice time.

The days get warmer, but it is still possible to have good conditions for sightseeing.

Summer

The summer in AlUla is extremely hot.

Visit Saudi states that summer temperatures can reach around 45 degrees Celsius.

This means that activities must be planned differently, often early in the morning or in the evening.

For a first-time trip, many would prefer the cooler months.

How many days do you need in AlUla?

We normally recommend at least three nights.

This gives you time to experience the most important sites without rushing.

2 nights

This is the minimum if you have a tight itinerary.

You can prioritize:

  • Hegra
  • Old Town
  • Elephant Rock

3 nights

This is our recommendation for most people.

You'll have time for:

  • Hegra
  • Dadan and Jabal Ikmah
  • Old Town
  • Oasis
  • Elephant Rock
  • Maraya / Ashar Valley
  • sunset or stargazing

4–5 nights

This is suitable if AlUla is one of the main goals of your trip.

Then you can also add:

  • hiking
  • Sharaan
  • hot air ballooning if available
  • spa
  • longer dinners
  • more relaxed days at the resort
  • more cultural events

AlUla is a place where it can actually be nice not to have a full schedule all the time.

How do you get to AlUla?

AlUla has its own international airport:

AlUla International Airport.

There are flight connections to several Saudi cities and some international destinations, but routes can vary throughout the year.

Common connections within Saudi Arabia may include cities like:

  • Riyadh
  • Jeddah

Schedules and frequency are subject to change.

On a tailor-made tour, AlUla can also be combined with private transport from other destinations.

From Madinah to AlUla

Madinah is located southeast of AlUla.

Many people travel between the two areas by car.

The drive takes about four to five hours, depending on the route and stops.

This makes it possible to combine AlUla with Madinah if the travel party and itinerary are suitable.

From Jeddah to AlUla

The distance from Jeddah is significantly longer.

Flying is therefore often the most practical solution.

Another option is to combine Jeddah and Madinah with the Haramain High-Speed Railway and then private transport on to AlUla.

Saudi Reiser can arrange the transport to fit the rest of your journey.

How do you get around in AlUla?

AlUla covers a large geographical area.

Hegra, Old Town, Ashar Valley, Elephant Rock, and other attractions are not clustered within walking distance.

You will therefore need transportation.

Possible solutions are:

  • private car with driver
  • rental car
  • hotel transport
  • organized tours
  • shuttle services when available

For Hegra and some other cultural sites, you must use the organized solutions that apply to the area.

For a tailor-made trip, we often recommend a private driver or pre-booked transfers.

This makes the stay considerably easier.

Where should you stay in AlUla?

AlUla has a steadily growing selection of accommodations.

You will find everything from simpler hotels and apartments to some of Saudi Arabia's most spectacular luxury resorts.

Ashar Valley

This is the area for those who want a truly special experience.

The resorts are surrounded by enormous sandstone mountains.

Here you will find well-known luxury options such as Banyan Tree AlUla and Our Habitas AlUla.

This is well-suited for:

  • couples
  • honeymoons
  • luxury travel
  • special occasions
  • travelers who want the hotel itself to be part of the experience

Old Town and surrounding areas

Staying near the Old Town gives you easier access to restaurants, cafes, and the historic area.

This can be convenient if you like to be able to go out in the evening without being dependent on long transport.

Other hotel areas

There are also several hotels and apartments scattered around AlUla.

Which area is best depends on your budget, transportation, and planned activities.

Saudi Reiser can help find the right hotel based on your itinerary.

Food and Restaurants in AlUla

The culinary scene has become an important part of AlUla.

Here you will find a combination of:

  • Saudi cuisine
  • Arabic dishes
  • international restaurants
  • fine dining
  • relaxed cafes
  • restaurants at luxury hotels

The Old Town and AlJadidah have several pleasant places to eat.

Ashar Valley also has exclusive restaurants and hotel restaurants.

A dinner out in the desert landscape can be an experience in itself.

What should you pack for AlUla?

AlUla is a desert destination, but the temperature varies greatly throughout the day and year.

We recommend packing, among other things:

  • good shoes
  • light clothing
  • clothes that cover shoulders and knees
  • sunglasses
  • sunscreen
  • a hat or cap
  • a water bottle
  • a light jacket
  • warmer garments for winter evenings
  • a camera or phone with plenty of storage

If you plan to go hiking, you should wear shoes with good grip.

Sun protection is important even if the temperature feels comfortable.

Is AlUla suitable for children?

Yes.

AlUla can work well for families, especially for children who enjoy nature, history, and adventure.

Elephant Rock, desert tours, Hegra, and large rock formations can also be fascinating for younger travelers.

But remember:

  • the distances are large
  • some tours last several hours
  • the summer heat can be demanding
  • some activities have age limits

With good planning, AlUla can become a very exciting family adventure.

AlUla for couples

AlUla is particularly well-suited for couples.

The landscape, resorts, and restaurants make the area one of Saudi Arabia's most romantic destinations.

Imagine:

sunset between the mountains

→ dinner under the stars

→ a luxury resort in Ashar Valley

→ a quiet morning in the desert

This makes AlUla well-suited for:

  • honeymoons
  • anniversaries
  • romantic tours
  • luxury vacations

Can you visit AlUla alone?

Yes.

But logistics and experiences should be planned before you arrive.

Several of the main attractions use timed entries or organized tours.

Especially during high season, popular time slots can sell out.

A pre-made plan therefore makes the visit much easier.

How much does a trip to AlUla cost?

The price level varies a lot.

AlUla can be experienced with standard hotel accommodation, but the area also has some very exclusive places to stay.

The costs are influenced by factors such as:

  • hotel standard
  • season
  • flights
  • private transport
  • guided tours
  • activities
  • restaurant choices

High season, festivals, and major events can lead to higher hotel prices.

Therefore, it's a good idea to book early if you are traveling during popular periods.

AlUla Moments and Events

Throughout the year, AlUla has a large program of culture, music, art, sports, and other events.

The program varies from year to year.

It may include:

  • concerts
  • Ancient Kingdoms Festival
  • AlUla Skies Festival
  • art events
  • sports events
  • wellness
  • stargazing
  • culinary experiences

Events can be a fantastic bonus to your trip.

At the same time, they can affect availability and hotel prices.

It is therefore wise to check the event calendar when planning.

AlUla as part of a round trip

For most Norwegian travelers, we recommend combining AlUla with other parts of Saudi Arabia.

A very good first-time trip is:

Riyadh → AlUla → Jeddah

This shows three completely different sides of the country.
