Riyadh in Saudi Arabia with modern skyline and Kingdom Centre

From historic Diriyah and traditional souks to modern skyscrapers, restaurants, shopping, and Riyadh Season.

In the middle of the Arabian Peninsula lies a city changing at a pace that is hard to imagine until you see it for yourself.

Riyadh is the capital of Saudi Arabia – a vast metropolis where modern skyscrapers, new restaurants, and futuristic districts meet ancient palaces, traditional souks, and historic Diriyah.

For many Norwegian travelers, Riyadh is the natural first encounter with modern Saudi Arabia.

Here, you can stand on an observation deck high above the city in the morning, learn about Saudi Arabia's history at a museum in the afternoon, and have dinner with a view of the historic mud-brick houses of Diriyah in the evening.

If you travel during Riyadh Season, the city becomes even more vibrant with concerts, sports, restaurants, international entertainment zones, and major events.

But Riyadh is much more than Riyadh Season.

In this guide, Saudi Reiser shows you the best things to see and do in Riyadh, how long you should stay, when to travel, and how the capital can be combined with the rest of Saudi Arabia.

Where is Riyadh Located?

Riyadh is centrally located in Saudi Arabia on the Najd plateau.

The city is far from both the Red Sea to the west and the Persian Gulf to the east.

What was once a relatively small oasis town is now a huge capital with several million inhabitants.

Riyadh is the country's political and administrative center, but it has also evolved into an increasingly important destination for culture, food, shopping, sports, and entertainment.

The size of the city should not be underestimated.

The distances between different districts and sights can be significant, and good planning makes a visit much easier.

Why Visit Riyadh?

Riyadh offers a glimpse into both Saudi Arabia's past and the country's rapid development.

You can visit historical sites related to the establishment of the modern Saudi state and, shortly after, find yourself among futuristic skyscrapers and some of the country's most modern restaurants.

Riyadh is particularly well-suited for those interested in:

  • history
  • architecture
  • Saudi culture
  • food and restaurants
  • shopping
  • museums
  • modern city life
  • sports and entertainment
  • major events
  • desert excursions

For first-time travelers, Riyadh is also a good introduction to how today's Saudi Arabia combines tradition and modernization.

1. Diriyah – Start with the History of Saudi Arabia

If you are to choose only one historical experience in the Riyadh area, Diriyah should be very high on your list.

Diriyah is located northwest of central Riyadh and is considered the birthplace of the first Saudi state.

This was formerly the seat of power for the Al Saud family.

Today, Diriyah has become one of the most important cultural and visitor areas in Saudi Arabia.

The area combines:

  • historical architecture
  • museums
  • restaurants
  • cafes
  • shops
  • cultural events
  • promenades
  • modern visitor facilities

Diriyah works very well as an afternoon and evening excursion from Riyadh.

2. At-Turaif – A UNESCO World Heritage Site

At-Turaif in Diriyah – UNESCO World Heritage site outside Riyadh

The heart of historic Diriyah is At-Turaif.

The district is a UNESCO World Heritage site and was the center of power for the first Saudi state.

At-Turaif is built in the traditional Najdi style.

The earth-colored buildings, courtyards, and narrow passages stand in sharp contrast to the glass and steel towers of modern Riyadh.

Here you can learn more about:

  • the first Saudi state
  • the history of the Al Saud family
  • Najdi architecture
  • life in historic Diriyah
  • the region's political and cultural development

The area contains several museums and historic buildings.

You can visit At-Turaif on your own or opt for a guided tour.

A guide can be particularly useful if you want to understand the connection between the site and the history of Saudi Arabia.

Opening hours, tickets, and visitor rules can change, so always check the official Diriyah website before your visit.

3. Bujairi Terrace – Dinner with a View of History

Right next to At-Turaif is Bujairi Terrace.

This is a modern restaurant and promenade district with a view of the historic buildings in Diriyah.

Here you will find a mix of:

  • Saudi restaurants
  • international restaurants
  • fine dining
  • cafes
  • outdoor seating

The area is particularly atmospheric in the evening.

The historic mud-brick buildings of At-Turaif are illuminated, while the restaurant area fills with guests.

A good plan could be:

At-Turaif in the late afternoon → sunset in Diriyah → dinner at Bujairi Terrace

This is one of the finest evenings you can have in Riyadh.

4. Kingdom Centre and Sky Bridge

Kingdom Centre is one of the most recognizable buildings in Riyadh.

The tower is easily identified by the large opening near the top and the bridge that connects the two sides.

The Sky Bridge offers a panoramic view of the city.

From here, you can truly see how vast Riyadh is.

The city stretches out in all directions, and from this height, the contrast between modern skyscrapers and the flat desert landscape becomes clear.

A visit is particularly well-timed:

  • in the late afternoon
  • around sunset
  • after dark

This allows you to see the city both in daylight and when the lights come on.

5. Al Faisaliah Tower

Another landmark in Riyadh is the Al Faisaliah Tower.

The tower is known for its distinctive glass globe near the top.

It was one of the first modern skyscrapers to truly define Riyadh's skyline.

The surrounding area includes, among other things:

  • shopping
  • restaurants
  • hotels
  • modern city life

Al Faisaliah and Kingdom Centre are both centrally located and can easily be combined on the same day.

6. National Museum of Saudi Arabia

If you want to better understand Saudi Arabia, the National Museum is an excellent place to start.

The museum is located in the Al Murabba district and tells the story of the Arabian Peninsula from prehistoric times to modern Saudi Arabia.

The exhibitions cover, among other topics:

  • geology and early settlement
  • ancient civilizations
  • pre-Islamic history
  • Islamic history
  • the Arabian Peninsula
  • the establishment of the modern Saudi state

The museum is very well-suited for a visit early in your trip.

When you later visit Diriyah, AlUla, or other historical sites, you will already have a better understanding of how the different time periods connect.

7. Al Murabba Historical Palace

Near the National Museum is the Al Murabba Historical Palace.

The palace was built as a residence for King Abdulaziz, the founder of modern Saudi Arabia.

The architecture is far more traditional than the modern buildings you see in much of today's Riyadh.

A visit provides an interesting insight into the transition between old Riyadh and the development of the modern capital.

The National Museum and Al Murabba can easily be combined in the same visit.

8. Masmak Fortress

Masmak Fortress is one of Riyadh's most famous historical landmarks.

The formidable clay and mud-brick fortress is located in the older part of the city.

The site is closely linked to the story of Abdulaziz ibn Saud and the recapture of Riyadh in 1902 – an event that later became highly significant for the unification of Saudi Arabia.

The fortress now serves as a museum.

Here, you will get an insight into:

  • Riyadh's history
  • traditional architecture
  • the development of the Saudi state
  • life in the city before its modern expansion

Masmak is naturally combined with a visit to Souq Al Zal.

9. Souq Al Zal – A Traditional Market in Riyadh

Not far from Masmak Fortress lies Souq Al Zal.

This is one of the city's most famous traditional markets.

Here you can find, among other things:

  • carpets
  • antiques
  • incense
  • oud
  • traditional clothing
  • coffee pots
  • decorations
  • old artifacts
  • souvenirs

This is something completely different from Riyadh's modern shopping malls.

The atmosphere, smells, and commerce provide a more traditional picture of the city.

If you want to buy something typically Saudi to take home, this is a good place to look.

Haggling can be part of the experience with some vendors.

10. King Abdullah Financial District – KAFD

If you want to see the other extreme of Riyadh, you can visit the King Abdullah Financial District.

KAFD consists of futuristic high-rises, offices, restaurants, and modern architecture.

The area illustrates how rapidly Riyadh is developing.

For those interested in architecture, it is particularly exciting to walk between the buildings and see how the various towers and public spaces are designed.

It is also an interesting place to photograph the city.

The combination of KAFD and historic Diriyah on the same trip perhaps shows the contrasts in Riyadh better than anything else.

11. Boulevard Riyadh City

Boulevard Riyadh City has become one of the most famous entertainment areas in the capital.

The area is particularly associated with Riyadh Season, but also contains restaurants, shops, and entertainment.

Here you can find:

  • restaurants and cafes
  • shops
  • family activities
  • shows
  • attractions
  • events
  • entertainment

What is open and available varies by season.

Therefore, check the current program before your visit.

The area is particularly lively in the evening.

12. Boulevard World

When Boulevard World is open as part of Riyadh Season, it is one of the city's largest entertainment areas.

The concept brings together zones inspired by different countries and cultures.

It combines, among other things:

  • food
  • shops
  • entertainment
  • attractions
  • rides
  • stage shows
  • family activities

This is not a traditional Saudi cultural attraction.

It is primarily large-scale entertainment.

For families and travelers who enjoy amusement parks and events, it can still be a very fun evening.

Availability varies with Riyadh Season.

13. Riyadh Season – When the Whole City Becomes a Festival

Riyadh Season has evolved into one of the largest event concepts in Saudi Arabia.

During the season, a large number of activities are organized across the city.

The program can include, among other things:

  • concerts
  • sporting events
  • international shows
  • food festivals
  • entertainment zones
  • family activities
  • theater
  • boxing and martial arts
  • football
  • special exhibitions

Among the areas that have been part of Riyadh Season are Boulevard City, Boulevard World, Kingdom Arena, VIA Riyadh, and The Groves.

The program changes from year to year.

If you are planning a trip to Riyadh during the period when Riyadh Season is held, you should therefore check the official event calendar before booking your trip.

A major concert or sporting event can be a fantastic bonus to your stay.

See the current program and dates for Riyadh Season

14. VIA Riyadh

VIA Riyadh is an exclusive area for shopping, restaurants, a hotel, and entertainment.

The architecture draws inspiration from the local Salmani style, while the area has a very modern and luxurious feel.

Here you will find, among other things:

  • luxury shops
  • restaurants
  • cinema
  • hotel
  • cafes

VIA Riyadh is a good choice if you want a quieter and more exclusive evening than the largest entertainment areas offer.

15. Edge of the World – Day Trip from Riyadh

One of the most spectacular natural areas near Riyadh is known as the Edge of the World.

The name comes from the dramatic cliffs that drop steeply down to a vast plain.

When you stand on the edge, the horizon seems almost endless.

The area is part of the Tuwaiq mountain formation.

Here you can experience:

  • spectacular viewpoints
  • short hikes
  • desert landscape
  • sunset
  • photography

This is a great contrast to the big city.

Edge of the World is located some distance outside Riyadh, and the final part of the journey may require a suitable vehicle.

For most foreign tourists, we therefore recommend an organized tour or a private driver with local knowledge.

Bring water, good shoes, and sun protection.

Wadi Hanifah – Nature in the Middle of the Metropolis

Riyadh is not just about buildings and desert.

Wadi Hanifah is a long valley that runs through the area around the city and Diriyah.

Parts of the valley have been developed with green spaces, walking paths, and recreational areas.

Here you can get a break from the traffic and city life.

The area can be combined with Diriyah and works well for a quieter afternoon.

Restaurants in Riyadh

Riyadh has evolved into one of the region's most interesting restaurant cities.

Here you can find everything from traditional Saudi restaurants to international fine-dining concepts.

You should try both local food and the modern restaurant scene.

Saudi dishes may include:

  • kabsa
  • jareesh
  • matazeez
  • qursan
  • mandi
  • grilled dishes
  • dates
  • Arabic coffee

Traditional Saudi food is often based on rice, meat, spices, and local ingredients.

At the same time, you will find a wide selection of restaurants from all over the world.

Especially areas like:

  • Diriyah and Bujairi Terrace
  • VIA Riyadh
  • KAFD
  • Olaya
  • The Boulevard areas

have a large selection of restaurants.

Saudi Coffee – More Than Just Coffee

When you visit Riyadh, you should try Saudi coffee.

It is usually served in small cups and is often flavored with cardamom and other spices.

Dates are often served alongside.

The coffee is also an important part of Saudi hospitality.

You will often be served it at hotels, restaurants, cultural sites, and in private settings.

Accepting a cup is an easy way to experience a bit of the local culture.

Shopping in Riyadh

Riyadh is a major shopping destination.

The city has a mix of traditional markets and modern luxury shopping malls.

For traditional products:

Souq Al Zal

Here you will find carpets, incense, oud, traditional clothing, antiques, and souvenirs.

For modern shopping, there is a long list of malls and shopping areas.

The selection includes both international chains and luxury brands.

VIA Riyadh is among the options if you want a more exclusive shopping experience.

What Should You Buy to Take Home?

Typical items to look for include:

  • dates
  • Saudi coffee
  • coffee pots
  • oud
  • perfume
  • incense
  • spices
  • traditional textiles
  • handicrafts
  • carpets

Quality and price vary greatly.

Traditional markets are often the most interesting experience if you want something more local.

When is the Best Time to Travel to Riyadh?

Riyadh has a hot and dry desert climate.

For most Norwegian tourists, the period from approximately October to April is the most comfortable.

During this time, the temperature is normally better suited for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

November to February

This is a very good period.

Daytime temperatures are often pleasant, while evenings can be surprisingly cool.

Bring a light jacket – and perhaps warmer clothes if you plan desert excursions.

March and April

Spring can also be nice.

Temperatures rise gradually, but many days are still good for sightseeing.

Summer

Summer in Riyadh is very hot.

Temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius (104°F) are not uncommon.

Sightseeing must therefore be planned differently, and large parts of the day are often spent indoors.

For a first-time trip, the winter half of the year will normally be the easiest choice.

How Many Days Do You Need in Riyadh?

For most people, we recommend two to four nights.

2 nights

With two nights, you can experience:

  • Diriyah and At-Turaif
  • Kingdom Centre
  • National Museum
  • Masmak Fortress and Souq Al Zal

This will be a relatively active itinerary.

3 nights

Three nights is our recommendation for many first-time travelers.

This also gives you time for:

  • Edge of the World
  • restaurant experiences
  • modern Riyadh
  • KAFD
  • Riyadh Season if it's ongoing

4 nights

Four nights is suitable if you want a more relaxed pace or plan to attend events.

This also allows more time for shopping, restaurants, and a full-day excursion.

Suggestion: 3 Days in Riyadh

Day 1 – Historic Riyadh

Start with the National Museum and Al Murabba Palace.

Continue to Masmak Fortress and Souq Al Zal.

Later in the day, head to Kingdom Centre for a view of the city.

End the day with dinner in central Riyadh.

Day 2 – Diriyah

Spend the morning at a relaxed pace or explore modern districts.

In the afternoon, travel to Diriyah.

Visit At-Turaif and learn about the first Saudi state.

Afterward, have dinner at Bujairi Terrace with a view of the historic area.

Day 3 – Edge of the World or Modern Riyadh

Choose between a nature day and a city day.

Option 1:

Take an organized excursion to the Edge of the World.

Option 2:

Visit KAFD, shopping areas, and modern Riyadh.

If Riyadh Season is ongoing, you can end your trip at Boulevard City or another event.

How Do You Get Around in Riyadh?

Riyadh is large.

It is important to understand this before planning your days.

Some attractions that look relatively close on a map can take time to reach due to traffic and distances.

Available modes of transport include:

  • private car with driver
  • taxi
  • app-based transport services
  • Riyadh Metro
  • rental car

Riyadh Metro

Riyadh has an extensive metro system that makes public transport far more relevant for visitors than before.

The metro can be very convenient between areas located near the stations.

However, because many tourist attractions are spread out, you will often still combine the metro with a taxi or private transport.

For a tailored tour, a private driver may be the easiest solution.

Is it Easy to Drive Yourself in Riyadh?

It is possible to rent a car.

However, Riyadh is a large city with heavy traffic, wide highways, and long distances.

For first-time visitors, taxis, transport apps, or a private driver will often be more relaxing.

If you plan to go out of the city to places like the Edge of the World, you should also check road conditions and the need for a suitable vehicle.

Where Should You Stay in Riyadh?

There is a wide range of hotels.

Which area is best depends on your priorities.

Olaya

Olaya is central and convenient.

Here you are close to Kingdom Centre, restaurants, shopping, and several hotels.

A good choice for first-time visitors.

KAFD and Northern Riyadh

This is a good option if you want modern surroundings and easy access to the newer parts of the city.

Diplomatic Quarter

A greener and quieter area with restaurants, parks, and modern facilities.

Near Diriyah

May be suitable if history, restaurants, and Diriyah are an important part of your stay.

Saudi Reiser can help you choose a hotel based on your itinerary to avoid unnecessarily long transport times.

Riyadh with Children

Riyadh can work well for families.

Especially during Riyadh Season, there are often a large number of family activities.

Potential experiences can include:

  • The Boulevard areas
  • amusement activities
  • museums
  • parks
  • shopping
  • family-friendly restaurants
  • seasonal events

The Edge of the World can also be exciting for older children, but the trip should be planned with a reputable operator.

In the summer, the heat must be taken seriously.

Riyadh for Couples

Riyadh can also be a surprisingly good destination for couples.

For example, a day could end with:

sunset from Kingdom Centre → a stroll through historic Diriyah → dinner at Bujairi Terrace

Other options include:

  • fine dining
  • hotel spas
  • luxury shopping
  • concerts
  • sporting events
  • a desert excursion

Combined with AlUla, you get a very diverse trip.

What Should You Wear in Riyadh?

As a tourist, you should dress respectfully.

Saudi Arabia has become much more open to international tourists, but local norms are still more conservative than in Norway.

For both men and women, it is sensible to wear clothes that are not very short or revealing.

Foreign women do not normally need to wear an abaya in regular public areas.

At religious or more traditional sites, you should be extra mindful of local rules and customs.

Alcohol in Riyadh

Alcohol is prohibited for regular tourists in Saudi Arabia.

You should not attempt to bring alcohol into the country.

Instead, restaurants and hotels serve a wide selection of:

  • non-alcoholic cocktails
  • fresh juices
  • Saudi coffee
  • tea
  • specialty drinks

Many restaurants have become very creative with their non-alcoholic drink menus.

Friday and Prayer

Friday is the most important day of the week for communal prayer in Islam.

Opening hours may therefore be different from the rest of the week.

Also, during Ramadan, the daily rhythm will change significantly.

Check the opening hours for attractions and restaurants if your visit falls during these periods.

Riyadh during Ramadan

Ramadan can be a very interesting time to visit Riyadh.

Daytime is quieter, while the city comes to life after sunset.

Hotels and restaurants often offer large iftar meals, and many areas stay open late into the night.

At the same time, the trip must be planned around different opening hours than the rest of the year.

For some travelers, this becomes an extra cultural experience.

Combine Riyadh with AlUla

Read also: AlUla – Complete Travel Guide to Saudi Arabia's Spectacular Desert Oasis

For first-time travelers, this is one of our favorite combinations.

Riyadh → AlUla

In Riyadh, you get:

  • a modern metropolis
  • Diriyah
  • museums
  • restaurants
  • shopping

In AlUla, you get:

  • Hegra
  • desert
  • mountains
  • oases
  • archaeology
  • silence

The contrast is enormous.

Three nights in Riyadh and three to four nights in AlUla work very well as part of a larger tour.

Combine Riyadh, AlUla, and Jeddah

For a complete introduction to Saudi Arabia, we often recommend:

Riyadh → AlUla → Jeddah

This provides three completely different experiences.

Riyadh

Modern Saudi Arabia, history, and a major city.

AlUla

Desert landscapes, Hegra, and archaeology.

Jeddah

Historic Al-Balad, coastal culture, and the Red Sea.

With about 9–12 days, you'll have time to experience all three without the trip becoming too hectic.

Riyadh as a Starting Point for a Larger Tour

Riyadh has good flight connections to large parts of Saudi Arabia.

This makes the city a natural starting point for a tour.

From Riyadh, the journey can continue to places like:

  • AlUla
  • Jeddah
  • Al-Ahsa
  • Dammam
  • Abha
  • Madinah

You can also take a train east towards Al-Ahsa and Dammam.

Feel free to read our guide to train travel in Saudi Arabia if you are considering combining train and air travel.

Is Riyadh Worth Visiting?

Yes – especially if you want to understand Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh may not have the dramatic mountains of AlUla or the Red Sea coast of Jeddah.

But the city tells another, equally important part of the story.

Here you see:

the old Saudi Arabia in Diriyah → the establishment of the modern state → the enormous development happening in today's Riyadh

In just a few days, you can move between centuries-old mud-brick architecture and some of the region's most futuristic districts.

It is precisely this contrast that makes Riyadh interesting.
